Short Description: 

The most powerful wizards have gathered to battle one another.  Only one will win.  Wizards must use reliable sources to research incantations for the battle, or their spells will fizzle.  Truly wise wizards must learn to tell the difference. 

Research Wizards is an information literacy card game designed to teach students ages 12+ about source evaluation.  Research Wizards corresponds to the Frame Authority Is Constructed and Contextual, from the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.  Players will discuss and challenge the relative value of various sources, each representing a different suit in the game.  The game includes four major actions/phases:  Parley, when players discuss and decide for themselves the relative value of each suit; Battle, which includes competition, player actions, and Challenges; Vengeance, for eliminated players to impact and speed up the remainder of the game; and Victory.

The Research Wizards website contains free game files, player directions, and printing tips for librarians and teachers who wish to use the game in their classrooms.  The website includes an editable, Microsoft Publisher version of the game.  Noncommercial use of the game is free for educational purposes with attribution to the author.  Librarians and teachers are encouraged to adapt the game as needed for their subject areas, student needs, and as the sources in the game evolve over time.  Adaptations must be shared under the same terms.

Players:  3-5 per deck

Play Time:  20-30 minutes, plus discussion

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

It is recommended to review directions out loud with students, with pauses for students to sort their decks and conduct the Parley phase of play.  To contextualize and reinforce learning, it is recommended to conclude the game with discussion questions; sample questions are provided at the bottom of the player directions file but may be adjusted as needed.

Short Description: 

This is part of an introductory first-year class to the university where students are introduced to the library and asked to think critically about how information is organized using the framework of critical cataloging. After watching a short video on the idea of classification and its problems with fixing identity categories, students analyze and categorize selected book from the collection, and then reflect on how knowledge is organized and their choices as authors.

This is an introductory English Composition course that is entirely first-year students over the summer session before they begin their first year of college. Students in this class write a "definitional essay" where they define a word used in a community they belong to that others may not know (e.g. an ethnic/cultural identity, a community based on a hobby, any other discourse community). They are also writing about campus services for a public audience of other first year students (including critiques).

As students are working on the definitional essay they discuss authorial choices and identity extensively. Students then watch a general library video, "Queering Classification," which discusses Sandy Berman and Emily Drabinski's queer cataloging and how library classification is not neutral. After watching the video students tour the library space and the librarians lead the students who work individually or in small groups to categorize and assign keywords to a cart of curated materials. After students work independently on the worksheet for ~15 minutes the librarian leads a small group discussion on neutrality and the challenges in organizing knowledge. The session ends with concluding questions and reflection on the choices they make as authors, which communities they are addressing, and how identity shifts. The entire activity is ~40 minutes.

Selecting engaging books is key for this activity! A popular title among students was a graphic novel on cooking (is it cooking, is it comics, etc.) and a book about food justice and African American Activism.

Short Description: 

An icebreaker activity for students at any level, “Visualizing Research” employs tactile or kinesthetic learning techniques to illustrate research as inquiry. This group activity can be used in a variety of disciplines and contexts. By having students create and share visual models of their ideas or experiences with research, the lesson plan increases classroom engagement and supports an understanding of the iterative process of research.

This activity is part of a larger class session focused on preparing students for their upcoming research projects. At this point in the semester students should have been introduced to a research project, but have not begun researching (or might not have chosen a topic). Students break up into groups of 3-4 students, depending on material availability. Each group receives a handful of construction materials (colored paper, play doh, magnetic tiles) to build a visual representation of research. Visual models should take 10-15 minutes to complete. At the end of the activity, the instructor brings the class together to discuss various visual models and how the models emulate the research process. (We first heard about the idea of creatively representing the research project from Marcela Y. Isuster from McGill University at LOEX 2019, this is inspired by their idea.)

Tips: 

Abstract materials (e.g. magnetic tiles, cut paper shapes) are more likely to contribute to abstract representations and descriptions of research. If the craft materials allow students more flexibility in creation (e.g. Play-doh, drawings), students might create more literal representations.  Post-it Notes can provide a way for students to add labels to their research models.

We’ve found success in taking pictures of students’ creations to share with the class, in future sessions, or with teaching colleagues.

Short Description: 

How can we facilitate first-year student engagement with critical Framework concepts, especially in a one-shot class? This active learning activity is designed to teach source evaluation in a 50-minute class. The activity, which incorporates elements of problem-based learning and uses a flipped classroom approach, was added to our institution’s first-year experience course. Prompting students to consider a local issue, the activity requires students to evaluate sources represented as “source cards,” choose sources they would use in the context of the assignment, and justify their decisions. Motivated by the challenge and relevance of the activity, students work cooperatively to consider questions at the heart of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy.

Assessment Short Description: 
Students watch three instructional videos (available at http://guides.lib.campbell.edu/cufs100) and answer short-answer questions before class. Instructors and/or librarians can review these for student comprehension. Instructors/librarians can gain informal assessment during the in-class activity through the debriefing discussion and group "presentation."
Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 
  • This activity may work best in smaller classes sizes (approx. 20 students), as it is easy to break into groups of 2-3 students. This also allows for more discussion after the activity.
  • This activity requires minimal 'maintenance' by instructional librarians. The source cards should be updated periodically to remain relevant.

This topic could fit well into instruction sessions that include significant treatment of source evaluation and is one potential approach as you move beyond simple categorization of sources as scholarly/non-scholarly or primary/secondary. It stops short of a critical examination of construction of authority but could be used to hint at greater subtlety and complexity. This topic has particular relevance for upper level undergraduates engaged in research, who may be starting to think about publication from an author’s perspective.

In post-session feedback, first-year students frequently express anxiety over how to physically navigate the library to find a book on the shelf. This is a simple, pre-session activity to help students try this out before class, so that they can discuss with their librarian any challenges they faced in attempting to complete the task. With the help of the course instructor, students are asked to find a book on their research topic (or course topic) and bring it to class.

Short Description: 

Many academic and public libraries display their unique archives and special collections materials in exhibition spaces. With an array of primary sources and visuals, special collections exhibitions offer a wonderful venue for experiential learning of constructed narratives and perspectives. This Exhibition Explorer Card Deck is designed to guide students to experience close viewing of special collections materials through explicit steps for thinking rhetorically and critically in an exhibit space. The Exhibition Explorer Deck consists of eight cards, including one card with basic instruction on how to use the deck, five cards asking students to answer specific questions about the exhibit, and two cards with short activities to promote mindfulness as students move through the exhibit space. Each card is double-sided with an activity title on one side and questions/activities on reverse. This exhibition exercise can take place complementary to or independent of hands-on instruction sessions in departments of archives and special collections. Also, it is adaptable to use in various kinds of exhibitions in libraries, museums, and other learning spaces.

In-class Visit Lesson plan with Exhibition Explorer Card Deck:

Working in pairs or small teams, students visit the Archives and Special Collections exhibition. First, students shuffle the Exhibition Explorer Card Deck, then they work through each activity card in a random order. The shuffling of cards encourages serendipitous discovery of the exhibition, in which each student group conducts the exhibition activities following different orders of cards in the exhibit space. (15-20 minutes)

After students complete all the activity cards, the course instructor and/or special collections librarian facilitate a group discussion in the exhibition gallery. Students are asked to share observations from the exhibit exercise. Each group selects the activity card they find most engaging or confusing and share their responses to that card. Students are also asked to reflect on the connections between the exhibit exercise and applications for rhetorical thinking. (15-20 minutes)

Learning Outcomes: 

- Students practice explicit steps for thinking rhetorically about their experiences in exhibition spaces.
- Students analyze the context of the exhibition and investigate materials on display to become critical viewers.
- Students gain an understanding that an exhibition is curated with specific perspectives.

Through extensive collaboration, Rhetorical Arts Instructor Laura Poladian and Special Collections Instruction Librarian Rachel Wen-Paloutzian have created and incorporated this Exhibition Explorer Card Deck into instruction sessions for Rhetorical Arts students in the William H. Hannon Library’s Department of Archives and Special Collections at Loyola Marymount University.

In Rhetorical Arts, a foundational course on speaking, writing, and thinking for social justice, students use reflective and affective strategies that connect critical thinking with self-awareness. Both Rhetorical Arts and the Department of Archives and Special Collections bring together scholarly and social works through imagination and inquiry.

The focus of the Exhibition Explorer Card Deck is to foster the kind of thinking (noticing, describing, inquiring) that promotes rhetorical awareness. Also, students meet information literacy learning outcomes for recognizing and evaluating various kinds of information and building analytical skills to evaluate information presented in exhibits.

Alternate Application:
The Exhibition Explorer Card Deck can be used as a stand-alone student assignment that is conducted outside of class time. Students can visit a special collections or library exhibition and complete the card activities on their own. In this case, the exhibition exercise is self-guided by students. Instructors may set additional guidelines for the assignment.

After students complete this exhibit exercise on their own, the course instructor may facilitate a follow-up discussion with students about the exhibit exercise and their experiences. Additionally, students can write a short reflective paper responding to the card activities and their experiences with the exhibit.

Card Modification:
The Exhibition Explorer Cards can be edited to use for exhibitions in various learning spaces other than archives and special collections. Also, the activities can be modified to meet specific learning needs in the local contexts.

Card Production:
The Exhibition Explorer Cards are easy to make. They are set to print double-sided on cardstock or regular paper, then cut the cards out, and they are ready for use!
