Bio:
Jen Sopchockchai Bankard is an Assistant Professor (Teaching) in the Dornsife College Writing Program. She joined the University of Southern California in 2013 after receiving her PhD in English with a certificate in cinema studies at Northeastern University. Dr. Bankard has served as a course coordinator, facilitating collaboration amongst faculty in the USC Writing Program, as well as an instructional advisor for graduate student instructors. Her dissertation, “Testing Reality’s Limits”: Mad Scientists, the Supernatural, and Realism in Late Victorian Popular Fiction, used contemporary film adaptations to better understand popular Victorian novels. This conception of popular culture as a series of intertextual relationships rather than isolated cultural moments significantly informs her composition pedagogy, for she uses a variety of popular media to help develop students’ critical thinking skills. In addition to pop culture and pedagogy, Professor Bankard’s research interests include teaching with technology and digital writing, and as a result she continually experiments with digital writing tools in her courses.
