Short Description: 

This exercise was designed for 1st year writing students with several different goals in mind: • encourage deeper, closer reading; • introduce the concept that information sources have perspective; • develop vocabulary around describing information and perspective; • acquaint students with the many values/uses of subject encyclopedias; • practice topic narrowing using these types of encyclopedia articles.

Learning Outcomes: 

• Distinguish/discern differences in treatment of the same subject in different texts. • Differentiate/recognize different types of information sources in lists of references. • Assess/compare/contrast author credentials. • Assess/compare/contrast authority, audience and perspective of various subject encyclopedias.

Students love wikipedia, and this exercise builds on that. They tell me that one of the ways they use wikipedia is to help them narrow their topic. I've often recommended to students that they read some encyclopedia articles to help them focus/narrow/define their research question. This exercise can serve as a way to encourage that use. It could be immediately followed by having them locate subject encyclopedia articles for themselves.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

When they are in their groups composing their presentation, you will need to encourage them to go into more detail, cite examples from the texts to support their claims. They will initially be making very broad, general statements. Students working on the 4th question will probably need the most assistance.

Short Description: 

This session was part of an undergraduate, critical thinking and global perspectives course. The course is offered by various disciplines on campus. This instance focused on global challenges (The Seven Revolutions developed by csis.org). For the session the students applied two frameworks to data: authority is constructed and contextual and scholarship as conversation. Students learned about a data life cycle concept with emphasis on evaluation. One of the main goals in introducing the students to the life cycle of data (see attached) was to broaden their understanding of how to search for data. Students may encounter data via social media or in a magazine article. Often those formats are more accessible and present data in a way that is easier to understand. The exercise helps students to see how data can sometimes be manipulated in those formats, while also developing search techniques to track data to its source.

The data literacy session was part of a semester-long, scaffolded research paper on a specific global challenge. Students were encouraged to use data to back up their arguments and research.

Assessment or Criteria for Success
Assessment Short Description: 
One issue with the assignment in its present form: students misunderstood the first question of the assignment (Provide two examples of types of data that inform your research topic). Many interpreted 'types' to mean actual data sets or reports instead of brainstorming about what data could exist. One hurdle students face, as Daniel Russell research scientist for Google would put it, is understanding how search works and what it can do for them. Students must know what questions they can ask. The first question was intended to help them think about what they could ask. This will require more modeling in the introduction.
Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

For future iterations of this topic, I would like for students to evaluate multiple examples of data used in journalistic writing. Both to understand how to write with data and to see how data can be employed to make a point or to support a story.

Short Description: 

This is a 65-minute workshop designed for 1st year composition students who will be using periodical sources in their research. Students will practice writing contextualizing statements, e.g. describing authors, genres, types of periodicals, for a variety of information sources of the type they will be using in their own research projects.

Learning Outcomes: 

• Identify different types of periodical information sources;
• Describe different periodical information sources;
• Identify relevant author credentials;
• Describe relevant author credentials;
• Compose a valid contextualizing statement describing an information source.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

When deciding on the link to use to the various periodical sources, it is a good idea to provide variety, e.g. EBSCO, Proquest, Sage. The first challenge for students will be to identify the title of the periodical source itself.

Short Description: 

This lesson was developed for HIS484 (Topics in the History of Gender and Sexuality/Pride in the time of HIV/AIDS) in the Spring of 2018. The students’ final assignment culminated in a multimedia or digital research project on a topic of their choosing and heavily relied on primary source and visual materials. This lesson focuses on how students, as content curators and analysts, can engage in deeper analysis and contextualization of the sources they present through their projects. Students collectively analyzed one example from a particular resource that they are already acquainted with and considered the language used by both systems of knowledge and the communities that they are studying, in order to help them form thoughtful, critical, and reflective perspectives.

Students will be able to analyze and contextualize primary source and visual materials related to HIV/AIDS. Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

This worked well with a small class, but may be more challenging with a larger class. I would likely have students work in groups to evaluate different works of art using the google worksheet instead of doing one for the whole class.

Short Description: 

This lesson is intended as a single session within a major’s research methods course. Rather than using a shorter “scholarly vs. non-scholarly” comparison worksheet, this activity asks students to work in groups to systematically examine a scholarly article in depth, identify and evaluate its various components visually and in writing, and then compare it to a non-scholarly article on the same topic. Groups then report back to the entire class. Discussion is guided so as to touch on the processes by which sources are created, what these methods say about their authority, and to consider contextually appropriate uses for them.

Assessment Short Description: 
The librarian and the teacher of record will evaluate students’ learning based on the verbal reports of their article comparisons and the resulting discussion between groups. Additional assessment will take place after the session by examining the written worksheets and marked-up articles.
Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

Unless seating allows for sitting in circles, pairs work better than groups of three for this activity; Some groups/students will spend too much time on some questions, so time-keeping and pacing are necessary; it is difficult to fit this activity into a 50-minutes session.

Short Description: 

Made to be an in class activity or a library resource requested by professors for courses. The first page goes with the instruction portion of a class. 'What is a primary source? What is a secondary source? What is a tertiary source?' It takes them through example types of sources, particularly concerned with history courses. The second and third pages require evaluation of a student's primary and secondary sources. They include a series of questions to make the student think about what makes a source reliable, if the source has a skewed perspective, or if the source is actually related to their research topic.

Short Description: 

Lesson plan for a 1-hour introductory Communication Studies theory class. Emphasis is on getting students to use the appropriate tool for their information need while considering indicators of authority. Collection of exercises requiring students to do the following: 1) look up background information on a communication theory; 2) chase down further readings; 3) find a scholarly article that applies a communication theory using the ComAbstracts database. This supports an "interpersonal communication paper" where students outline and critique a communication theory and identify a study that applies the theory.

Short Description: 

UPDATE: PLEASE USE SIFT & PICK INSTEAD!

I created the SIFT & PICK Fact Checking & Source Evaluation process to improve upon P.R.O.V.E.N. SIFT & PICK better distinguishes between lateral reading to fact check information and vertical reading to select the best sources for specific information needs. It is briefer and better lends itself to teaching concepts such as information creation,  authority/expertise, bias, and scholarly conversation, in the context of source evaluation.

P.R.O.V.E.N. was designed to provide students with a source evaluation process that was grounded in both the ACRL Framework and Michael Caulfield's "Four Moves and a Habit" from his ebook, "Web Literacy for Student Fact-Checkers" (2017). The process included both strategies for fact-checking by examining other sources such as internet fact-checking tools, and strategies for analyzing the source itself by examining its purpose, relevance, objectivity, verifiability, expertise, and newness. The "P.R.O.V.E.N." acronym emphasized the process students could go through to demonstrate credibility based on their particular needs, rather than the state of a particular source (i.e. credible or not). The questions were designed to guide this evaluation process, not to serve as a checklist.

At Santa Barbara City College, we are in the process of switching from P.R.O.V.E.N. to the new SIFT & PICK Fact Checking & Source Evaluation process.

In the past, we used P.R.O.V.E.N. as a supplement to instruction on evaluating sources, at the reference desk, in our Library 101 course, or in other courses with research assignments. We used a abbreviated version of P.R.O.V.E.N. on most research guides but are in the process of switching to SIFT & PICK on all guides.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

P.R.O.V.E.N. was designed to get students thinking beyond a black and white approach to source evaluation (i.e. thinking of a source as either credible or not credible). We found that P.R.O.V.E.N. worked best when we had the opportunity to teach source evaluation as a process of determining the appropriateness and usefulness of a particular source for a particular purpose. SIFT & PICK is designed to support that process more effectively.

Short Description: 

In this activity, students will work on maintaining eye contact with their audience while giving an impromptu speech. The goal is to stop (or reduce) students' tendency to look at their visual aid during speech presentations.

Short Description: 

This resource and accompanying assignment focuses on evaluating news sources/claims and were used in an online information literacy class.

Students will be able to critically evaluate information sources using a number of factors, including the creator’s authority and perspective, the intended audience, the accuracy of the content, the context of the information need, and one's own perspective in interpreting the information

Setting: Online, 8-week information literacy course. This three-credit course is typically taught as a 16-week semester offering, but was altered for a summer 2017 session. Context: As part of a larger module on evaluating information, students are presented with multiple resources/readings related to news sources, perspective of news sources, fake news/misinformation, and tips for evaluating claims. This particular assignment had students view a Prezi presentation titled Fact Checking Pro and then complete a LibWizard that presented multiple claims related to coffee/caffeine consumption. For each claim, students ranked the quality of the headline’s claim on a sclae of 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent), and provided an explanation for their choice. Students also had to describe the steps they took to fact check the claim.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

It may be beneficial to provide more prompts in the LibWizard to gauge student fact-checking efforts. Some students were very detailed; others were not. Additionally, it would be interesting and maybe more interactive for the students if they could somehow see how their peers had rated the source. I’m not sure how to do this in the LibWizard, but there may be some other way to make this happen. In a face-to-face setting, this would be easier to accomplish
