Short Description: 

This activity introduces students to a variety of databases in their discipline by asking them to quickly review and prepare an “elevator speech” on the database’s best features and content. Students then do three rounds of “speed dating” to share with other students what they’ve discovered.

This activity works best if all students are in the same discipline, although it can be scaled to include general research databases or multiple disciplines. Part C asks students to quickly identify a research topic and evaluate their databases by searching for that topic. This will work if students already have a research topic in mind for an assignment. If not, you may wish to offer one or more examples for them to use, or skip it entirely.

Short Description: 

This instructional session coincided with a project comparing data from two cities for an Urban Studies 1000 level (Freshmen) course. The session provided a basic overview of Simply Map as a web-based application, described the data available within and its origins (Census, American Community Survey, etc.), two activities for creating and visualizing the data, and supporting materials for understanding the data including a libguide and deliverable handout.

This session was conducted before the announcement of the course project that specifically calls for students to create SimplyMap reports to compare data across multiple locations for the Urban Studies course. Data found in SimplyMap can be used by students as maps, charts, and tables on a poster project to be completed at the semester's end.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

Ensure that all users have SimplyMap access before the session begins. SimplyMap does have a user threshold for simultaneous access so contact the company to ensure enough seats for your session.

Short Description: 

Students will generate a well-reasoned conclusion in a two-page paper in which they identify a "good" Internet source and a "bad" Internet source, using IL source evaluation terminology (outlined in CRAAP) to guide their writing.

They will then explain why the good source should be used to investigate the chosen topic, and why the bad source should not be used in their investigation.

This lesson was created by a Chemistry professor for his Honors college Chemistry course. It has been enhanced for IL and adapted for our college's QEP (theme: critical thinking). It was also adapted throughout attending a Backwards Design class as an example (Library Juice Academy) thus the GRASPS instructional design tool was used.

Content will be uploaded into their online course shell (in the course management system) for them to view prior to an in-person library session. This will include a short library orientation video and another short using library resources video – both of which I created in the last year.

Students will attend a face-to-face library session – a full 75-minute class.

Short Description: 

This group activity can be used in a variety of disciplines and contexts. Pass the Problem aims to have students provide feedback to other students on database and keyword selection. By having students critique each other it works to build critical self-reflection during the research process (it's also pretty fun!).

This activity was part of a larger class session focused on preparing students for their interdisciplinary research projects. At this point in the semester students did not yet have their own research topics. It also took place outside of a computer classroom where not all students had laptops. Students break up into groups of 3-4 students. You can make as many topics as you want. For a class of 25 I created 4 topic options. Each group receives 5-10 minutes to complete each segment. When the timer is up they switch with a group. No one should receive the paper they start with until the very end. At the end of the activity we come back as a class and discuss how it went and what strategies they might implement in their own research processes. (I first heard about the idea of passing a problem in an interactive way from Sarah Lucchesi and Jenn Sams from Michigan Tech at Lake Superior Libraries Symposium, this is inspired by their idea.)

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

Tips: Activity works well when paired with additional content. You can mix up the questions or add more. Pitfall: Choosing approachable topics with lots of keywords options. It can be hard to have students easily trade papers in classrooms set up with rows, you may need to facilitate the passing.

Short Description: 

Using ProQuest SIRS Issues Researcher or similar database, groups of students work together to find and read four informative magazine articles representing a variety of opinions on a topic. For each magazine article they write an MLA citation. In an oral presentation of less than three minutes per group, they summarize the controversy without giving their own opinions and explain why they chose the four articles. Students are told to be prepared to answer questions about their topic and why they selected each of the four articles. Students are given basic instruction on writing an MLA citation and using a database.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

Students tend to summarize the articles rather than the controversy. Also, students tend to want to give their own opinions. It is important to stress that they are to summarize the controversy and different perspectives. I sometimes have them think of it as a work assignment. The boss is a very busy person and wants you to research the topic and provide an executive summary. It is a challenging assignment, but I have found that the students rise to the challenge.

Short Description: 

Entering students all take MGT101 – Business Management Practice. Creation of a business plan for a unique product or service is the major project for this course. This Library assignment uses a workshop format to give student groups in Management 101 the task of exploring, evaluating, and reviewing a particular resource important in the business plan research process. Groups are provided a work sheet that presents a set of tasks and 'deliverables' which form the basis of a presentation during which they teach their peers how to use the resource, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of that resource. Active engagement exploring new databases and resources helps students acquire skills necessary for successful completion of course assignments. Including students in the teaching process promotes this engagement, and often results in a more successful transfer of knowledge and skills to all students. Librarians and professors may chime in at the close of each presentation to underscore points made by student evaluators, or further those presentations by providing additional strategies or pathways to uncover needed information of benefit to all students as they work to develop their business plans.

MGT101 is a course all students must take at Menlo College. In the course, groups are assigned the task of identifying a unique product or service for which they must develop a strong business plan. At the end of the semester, there is a competition to select the most successful plans that are then presented to Venture Capitalists for review and comment. The Librarians worked together to develop this interactive workshop in order to better ensure student engagement in the research process and acquisition of needed skills leading to the successful completion of a solid business plan. We developed this workshop to give students the opportunity to evaluate different resources, and present the findings to their peers. We have found this to be far more successful than a straight lecture format.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

Timing is everything. Keeping track of how much time you have and making sure groups adhere to the schedule can sometimes be problematic. The compressed nature of the workshop does help focus everyone's attention. This session is usually taught about 5 weeks into the semester. As a result, students have already come to the library for other workshops with Composition and/or Freshmen Year Experience courses. As a result, they are at least aware that the library has databases, and in many cases have worked with one or two of them to search for news or background information for another project. We always have two librarians present for every session so that along with the professor, we have help available as student groups explore databases/resources/websites and put together the information they will use to teach their peers. We also require students to view the video uploaded above to begin to have some familiarity with the process upon which they are about to embark. Individual professors may also require particular readings be done in advance of the Library workshop.

This activity proceeds via Socratic questioning. The goal is to have students explain the common stumbling blocks they encounter as they look for information and as they write papers (if they have). The role of the librarian is to facilitate the discussion by providing a contextual framework for student experiences. By showing students that their research process follows a common pattern, they can make better choices about how, when, and where to look for information (e.g., not jumping straight to peer-reviewed articles when they can barely define their topic)

This is a frequent activity I developed for our second-semester composition program. The common assignment is an annotated bibliography of 8-12 sources. Analyzing student bibliographies showed that they were having a tough time understanding how format can affect the usefulness of an information source, within context. The most frequent problem involved students jumping straight to peer-reviewed scholarship when they could barely articulate their research question. Likewise, students often do not approach research strategically and with an eye towards collecting a range of sources that will help address many common research needs. Since this activity is coupled to an annotated bibliography, a secondary pay-off is in helping students write their annotations. Once able to articulate the information need a source satisfies, they can better conceptualize how to incorporate the information into their paper.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

This is a Socratic activity, so the librarian has to take the traditional "sage on the stage" approach and has to be comfortable keeping the conversation on track, no matter where it might go. The attached instructions are only a loose framework to help guide discussion.

This set of assignments is designed to help students: (a) grow initial thoughts and questions into carefully scoped and well-reasoned research papers, and (b) develop critical thinking skills through interrogation of familiar images of religion and spirituality in American popular culture.

Learning Outcomes: 

a) Critically evaluate images of religion in American popular culture (primary sources), using criteria such as date, authorship, context, and rationale for creation and/or dissemination. b) Formulate an appropriately scoped research question based on information gaps or on reexamination of existing information. c) Locate and access pertinent scholarly sources beyond course readings. d) Analyze specific aspects of a religious tradition as historical, social, and cultural phenomena through integration of course content and outside scholarly sources. e) Demonstrate an understanding of the value of information and nature of the scholarly conversation through the consistent and accurate citation of sources in Chicago style. f) Interpret chosen images (primary sources), course material, and other secondary sources in order to draw reasonable conclusions about the transformation of religious concepts through their circulation in American popular culture.
