Short Description: 

The Penn State Berks Privacy Workshop Series focuses on privacy issues for students in the past, present, and future.  The Privacy Workshop spotlights privacy practices and concerns in the current moment; Digital Leadership explores future implications of past and current digital behaviors; Digital Shred provides tools to evaluate and mitigate the damage of past digital behaviors; and Digital Wellness focuses on privacy across the lifespan - bringing together the past, present, & future by finding a balance of technology & wellness, while aligning habits and goals.  Each workshop is grounded in theory – countering approaches that overpromise user control in the face of information asymmetries and the control paradox – and embrace students’ autonomy and agency by avoiding prescribed solutions, and instead encouraging decision-making frameworks.

  1. Reflect on and describe their digital privacy priorities in order to articulate the benefits and risks of their digital dossier
  2. Apply a growth mindset to critically examine their current data exhaust // digital footprint and recognize when change is needed

This activity was done during a citation panel event: https://cal.lmu.edu/event/citations2020#.XmA4O5NKhTY. This was 25 minutes (15 minutes to read and discuss in pairs and 10 minutes to share with the larger group). Discussion was facilitated.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

When facilitating larger discussion, provide summary of each reading as some groups may need context. Review each questions so attendees can share notes taken. Save last question of each example for a shared discussion (each example has same last question).

Short Description: 

This article describes an active-learning exercise intended to help teach copyright, fair use, and Creative Commons licenses. In the exercise students use a worksheet to draw original pictures, create derivative pictures on tracing paper, select Creative Commons licenses, and explore commercial usage, fair use, and copyright infringement. Librarian-instructors may find the completed worksheets to be useful aids to supplement copyright lectures; student perspectives will be integral because they are generating the examples used in discussion. Although a scholarly communication librarian developed this exercise to help introduce some basic copyright information to an undergraduate studio art and design class, the exercise can be performed in a general educational setting.

Introductory understanding of how copyright, fair use, and Creative Commons licenses.

This exercise was created, developed, and used with senior studio art majors enrolled in a capstone course. Students were to upload their creative portfolios to an open access institutional repository, with the option of assigning a Creative Commons license of their choosing. The scholarly communication librarian and author of the article came up with the exercise as a fun, engaging way to teach the students about copyright, fair use, and Creative Commons licenses in a one-shot session.

This topic could fit well into instruction sessions that include significant treatment of source evaluation and is one potential approach as you move beyond simple categorization of sources as scholarly/non-scholarly or primary/secondary. It stops short of a critical examination of construction of authority but could be used to hint at greater subtlety and complexity. This topic has particular relevance for upper level undergraduates engaged in research, who may be starting to think about publication from an author’s perspective.

An open access MOOC in French to bonify the information literacy skills of university students (with Moodle).

Short Description: 

This lesson is intended to increase students’ awareness of content types and how various source types are created in order to 1) assist them in accurate citation practices and 2) help them to effectively select and evaluate sources using basic indicators such as purpose, audience, authorship, and additional factors that shape the creation of the source.

Learning Outcomes: 

Students will be able to …
1) evaluate sources using basic indicators e.g. authorship, publication type, purpose.
2) articulate the capabilities and constraints of information developed through various creation processes.
3) recognize that authoritative content may be packaged formally or informally and may include sources of all types.

Course Context (e.g. how it was implemented or integrated): 

In collaboration with writing instructors, librarians developed a series of activities for instructors to use in support of first-year student information literacy outcomes related to source evaluation. While course instructors facilitated this activity in their classrooms, librarians also used it in other first-year courses with a research focus. In librarian-facilitated classes, the librarian puts students in small groups to work together on one worksheet comparing a scholarly article to another source type.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips: 

Students will look up the sample publication sources to learn about them but may need encouragement to open the shortened URLs to compare the sample articles from the sources. It may also be helpful to show the debrief questions as students are working on their comparison worksheets so they have a deeper purpose when exploring and comparing the sources, lending to a richer class discussion.
